Situational Writing (WS 3)

Situational Writing Sample

LOST PET AT CLEMENTI ESTATE

This is my pet cat, Snowy. She has white fur, a pair of pretty green eyes and wears a bell on a red ribbon around her neck. She also has a lame hind leg and cannot wander far on her own.

I have been desperately looking for her since her disappearance two days ago. I am very certain she is still around this estate.

If you see her, please contact me (Mrs Jennifer Chan) at 6475 3000 as my 5-year-old daughter is not taking Snowy’s disappearance well.

A reward would be given to anyone who finds Snowy.

YOUR TASK

You were passing Clementi Estate yesterday when you spotted a cat fitting Snowy’s description. You decided to contact Mrs Jennifer Chan.
Write an email to your best friend, Cynthia.

In your email, include the following information:

-       description of Snowy
-       what you would like to do
-       why you would like to do that (provide 2 reasons)
-       ask Cynthia to accompany you to see Mrs Jennifer Chan

STEPS

After studying the stimulus and my task, I will highlight all the important information to ensure my 6 content marks:

After I have highlighted the key points that I HAVE to include in my writing, I will start to think about how I can best arrange my writing with P-A-C in mind.

P - Purpose: to persuade my best friend Cynthia
A - Audience: my best friend
C - Context: informal e-mail to a close friend

I will then want to organise my writing in this manner:

  1. Friendly greeting and opening
  2. Introduction to situation
  3. Description of Snowy and why I think I saw it
  4. My chosen action and 2 reasons why
  5. Persuade Cynthia to accompany me
  6. Friendly closing / sign-off

SAMPLE:

Dear Cynthia,

How are you? I hope you have been well since the last time we met.

I have something to share with you! While passing through the Clementi Estate on my way to my enrichment class yesterday, I saw a white cat fitting the description of a lost pet, Snowy. I came to know about Snowy from a notice displayed near my block on the day before yesterday.
In the notice, Mrs Jennifer Chan describes Snowy as having white fur, a pair of green eyes and a red ribbon with an attached bell around its neckThe cat I saw yesterday fit those descriptions exactly. What is more, the white cat seemed to be was limping, which matches Mrs Chan's description of Snowy having a lame hind leg.

I want to contact Mrs Chan to let her know that I have spotted a cat that looked very similar to hers. I feel sorry for her family as Mrs Chan has been desperately searching for her pet cat for three days and her young 5-year-old daughter misses Snowy terribly. Mrs Chan also promises a reward for the person who finds Snowy.

Could you please accompany me to look for Mrs Chan to bring her to the place where I last saw Snowy? I am quite shy so your company would really help make me feel more confident. If you are willing, I will split the reward with you as well.

Please let me know if you are willing to accompany me to look for Mrs Chan. I hope to hear a favourable rely from you soon.

Your friend,
Clara
